Abstract expressionism refers to a broad movement that is largely not represented in art. It was born in the United States between the 1940s & 1950s. American artists are the ones who lead it. These artists were heavily influenced and influenced by European immigrants who grew-up during the Depression. Abstract Expressionism encompassed several quite different styles. These paintings share some common characteristics, such as the use of all the canvas and the equal importance given to the entire canvas. Abstract art is a way to express ideas that are spiritual, unconscious, or mental.

In January 1911, Wassily Kandinsky, a painter, was in Munich. He visited Arnold Schoenberg’s concert and became inspired to write to him. Kandinsky wrote that he was impressed by Schoenberg’s atonal compositional technique, which was different from the established rules of harmony. Kandinsky was inspired by these ideas and tried to move away from the traditional figurative methods of painting. Kandinsky used music terminology to describe the emotional qualities of colour. This friendship was vital for both Kandinsky’s and Schoenberg’s development. They shared similar views regarding the purpose and nature art. As they were each inspiring one another, their collaboration enabled them both to realize their full potential. Kandinsky said one of his most famous lines: “Let your ears hear music and your eyes see painting. And then, stop thinking.” Think about whether you have been able to ‘walkabout’ in a completely new world through your work. What more can you ask for?

These questions will be answered if I compare Kandinsky’s art with Schoenberg’s musical compositions, as well as by analysing Kandinsky’s works and Schoenberg’s impact on them.

“Circles in a Circle”, a closed and compact composition. Kandinsky began an in-depth study of the circle, starting with this painting. Galka Scheyer was his first contact. Kandinsky began to study the circle as an artistic unit by writing a letter.

The more deep the blue, the more it calls man to the infinite. It eventually loses its sound and turns silent stillness into white …. (Kandinsky’s quote).

Kandinsky would gradually make his paintings more abstract. You can also see stops at Murnau Train and Castle. Kandinsky painted the painting after having traveled extensively throughout Europe. He settled in Murnau in Bavaria in 1909. Although the forms of this painting are not as clear as the color, it is easy to see how the color shapes the form.

Schoenberg’s music is inspired by Kandinsky’s work. They both abandon the traditional rules of music or painting to find a different way to express themselves. Kandinsky is able to touch the music and paint it. Both music and painting were inspired by an inner need for expression.

Although Shoenberg and Kandinsky were artists of a different type, they shared many similarities. Both had the desire to express themselves and were open to new ways of doing so. They were well-known world artists for their passion for expression, even though it was not appreciated by everyone.
